How many times have you compromised your cinematic taste and viewed a film to please a man? Well, I am guilty of this too many times to count. Recently I was coerced into watching “The Blues Brothers” by my boyfriend. He was sick and I was feeling sorry for him so I didn’t put up much of a fight this time. When he told me that this movie was based of of a Saturday Night Live skit, I felt slightly better. Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed this one.
The basic plot line is as follows: Jake Blues (played by John Belushi) is released from jail and upon being picked up by his brother Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) they attempt to reunite their old band to save the Catholic home where they were raised by nuns. They believe they are “on a mission from God”, and along the way get into some crazy hijinks. While there was action and funny one-liners for my boyfriend to enjoy, there was also a killer soundtrack and musical numbers for me to sing along to. James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Ray Charles all have cameos and musical numbers in this film.
I found there were some questionable plot lines involving women, (which I won’t give away so as to spoil the movie) but overall I enjoyed laughing and singing (plus being able to spend quality time with my guy as well). Out of all the SNL skits turned movies (Superstar, Night at the Roxbury, Macgruber, etc.) this is probably my favorite.
